Territorial
Acknowledgement
We gratefully acknowledge that the land
on which we live and work is part of the
Haldimand Tract — land promised in
1784 to the Haudenosaunee of the Six
Nations of the Grand River. The
agreement encompassed six miles on
either side of the Grand River, totaling
approximately 950,000 acres. Today, less
than 5% of that land remains under the
stewardship of the Six Nations
community.
At United Way Waterloo Region, we
offer this territorial acknowledgment not
as a formality, but as a call to reflection,
learning, and meaningful action. We are
committed to reconciliation — a
commitment that includes unlearning
colonial practices, amplifying Indigenous
voices, and working toward equity and
justice in all that we do.
We recognize the responsibility we carry
to understand the true history of this
land, including the many injustices that
have occurred and their ongoing
impacts. We acknowledge that early
agreements to share the land were too
often met with appropriation and
displacement, and we strive to do better
as we work alongside Indigenous
communities to build a more just and
inclusive future.
