The Impact
The Literacy Group exceeded expectations, reaching
121% of its learner participation target and 133%
of its learner progress target, meaning more
learners than ever were accessing programs and
achieving their learning goals.
United for Literacy reported that 100% of
learners improved their speaking and
communication skills, while 95% reported
improvements in organizing, completing,
and feeling positive about their schoolwork.

Anna immigrated to Canada, raised a family, and built a
life in her community, but limited literacy skills affected
her confidence and independence. Everyday tasks like
reading cards, completing forms, understanding labels,
and following TV captions often required help.
As her children grew older and moved away, Anna
became increasingly isolated. Traditional programs
didn’t fit her circumstances, but The Literacy Group
offered flexible, personalized support.
With a tutor, Anna achieved a goal she once thought
was out of reach: reading English independently. Today,
she reads books, writes cards, follows TV captions, and
communicates more confidently.
"It feels so good to be able to read a story by myself or
closed captions on the TV without help." Anna has
gained more than literacy skills—she has gained
confidence and greater independence.
